West Ham United finished 2021/22 in 7th at the Premier League table, which qualified them for a playoff in the UEFA Conference League. It was a bit of a disappointment, as they fell short of the UEFA Europa League title after being knocked out by Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 in the semi-final. With stalwarts such as Declan Rice and Michail Antonio returning, David Moyes’ side has made most of the transfer window, signing the likes of Gianluca Scamacca, Nayef Aguerd, Flynn Downes and Alphonse Areola (from loan). The pre-season however has been a mixed bag for the Hammers as they are without wins, drawing thrice and losing 1-3 to Rangers at Ibrox. It will be intriguing to see how far this side will go, with no less than the defending champions out to test them.

Manchester City are determined to pick up a third consecutive Cup and challenge for a Quadruple after narrowly edging out Liverpool last season on the final day of competition. Pep Guardiola’s side has had a massive lineup change with the arrival of star striker Erling Haaland and Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips, whilst losing names such as Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Oleksandr Zinchenko. Meanwhile, stars such as Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden remain crucial to the Cityzens lineup. However, their campaign started off quite patchy as they lost 1-3 to Liverpool in the Community Shield, with Julian Alvarez the only one netting for the Mancunians. However, they should be the superior ones in the match against the Hammers.
