Vietnam will be making their World Cup debut for either the men’s or women’s editions, becoming one of two Southeast Asian teams to do so this year, and the third ASEAN team overall. Also the highest-ranked ASEAN team by FIFA, they secured their berth after a hard-fought playoff series in the AFC Cup, beating Thailand (2-0) and Chinese Taipei (2-1). Huynh Nhu and Thai Thi Thao scored in the first game, while Chuong Thi Kieu and Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy netted in the later match. They also won the gold medal at the recent SEA Games, defeating Myanmar 2-0. The Mai Duc Chung-led squad have however been unable to win any games in the tournament leadup, with a close loss to both Germany (1-2) and New Zealand (0-2), before being routed by Spain 0-9. Could they overcome these minor setbacks and go toe-to-toe with the defending champs?
