UEFA reveals 2022 Team of the Season (Sports News) – With the 2021/22 season of the UEFA Champions League in the books, and the crowning of Real Madrid for the 14th time, we now turn attention to the best individual accomplishments of the campaign. Indeed, UEFA has released the names of the players who stood out this season–as well as their pick for Player of the Year.

In an unsurprising move, Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema was named UEFA’s best player. Apart from scoring 15 goals in 12 games, he led the Blancos several times in losing situations to win their knockout games leading to the final. And despite his spectacular goal being ruled as offside in the final, he helped rally his team to victory in the competition.
The 34-year old Benzema is also in the running for this year’s Ballon d’Or, whose rules were modified to include just the 2021/22 club football season. His closest competitors for the honour would be Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who come from losing side Liverpool. They have also faced off against each other in the Africa Cup of Nations 2021 final, where Mane’s Senegal beat Salah’s Egypt.
Benzema has also been called up to the France national team, for which he will play in the FIFA World Cup later this year. He will also be capped for the latest season of UEFA Nations League, which will be taking place this summer.

Benzema is joined by other notable names, mainly coming from his own club as well as from runners-up Liverpool. Other members who participated in the knockout stages, such as Manchester City, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain were also named to the team.
Notably, Thibaut Courtois was selected as the keeper of the 2021/22 UEFA Team. The Belgian was named the final’s “Man of the Match” after making spectacular saves to deny Liverpool any chance at netting throughout the game. The lone scorer in the final, 21-year-old Brazilian Vinicius Junior, was deservedly named to the forward line of the squad. Veteran Blancos midfielder and Croatian captain Luka Modric also made the Team.
