Southampton v Newcastle EFL Cup Prediction – Preview

Southampton F.C.

Southampton punched their ticket to the semi-final by seeing off powerhouses Manchester City, 2-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium. The Saints shocked everyone as Sekou Mara’s strike fired them into the lead at 23 minutes. Then, after five minutes, Moussa Djenepo doubled the lead with a long range finish. By the time Man City superstars Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland came on, the home side had firmly held on to their lead. This gave new manager Nathan Jones his first win, although Southampton would have mixed fortunes in the Prem soon after as they beat Everton (2-1) behidnd James Ward-Prowse’s double, but fell to Aston Villa (0-1) in the next game. A long injury list will also be a handicap as they face a strong Newcastle side in the next two legs of the competition. Could they pull through?

Newcastle United F.C.

Newcastle United are looking to win their first ever EFL Cup, as they saw off Leicester City 2-0 en route to the semis. The Magpies have tons of chance in the first period, but were unable to make a ripple until the second half. Dan Burn then went into the box from the left, then finished low to the delight of the home crowd. Joelinton then added on to the lead ten minutes on, when he took Miguel Almiron’s through ball and fired it home. The Eddie Howe-led side would stay undefeated in their next two games in the Prem, as they beat Fulham 1-0 behind Alexander Isak’s late strike and drew Crystal Palace 0-0 afterwards. Can they once again reassert their dominance against the hungry Saints in this semi-final first leg?
