South Korea v Portugal Prediction – Preview

South Korea/ Korea Republic

South Korea are currently at third in Group G with a single point. They’ve been off to a rough start, as they opened with a scoreless draw with Uruguay, and lost a five-goal thriller to Ghana (2-3). The Taegeuk Warriors opened their second match strongly, but Mohammed Salisu opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Mohammed Kudus  then doubled The Black Stars’ lead with a glancing header before halftime. Cho Gue-sung then rallied the South Koreans with two headers to level, but Kudus responded with a finish past Kim Seung-gyu, enough to secure the win. Manager Paulo Bento unfortunately lost his temper at the officiating, which caused him to be sent off as the game concluded. The Portuguese native will then miss the next group stage against his countrymen, with Sergio Costa stepping in as boss. Can the Warriors somehow muster a miracle and continue to give hope for Asia past the group stage?

Portugal

Portugal have had a Cinderella run in the World Cup so far, after qualifying via the UEFA playoffs for the tournament. They started off their campaign by narrowly edging out Ghana 3-2, then proceeded to see off Uruguay 2-0 at the Lusail Stadium. Controversy erupted with A Seleçao’s first goal, wherein Bruno Fernandes‘ curling shot barely passed Cristiano Ronaldo‘s head on its way to the net. While it was initially thought to have come from five-time Ballon d’Or winner, the call was later corrected and the Manchester United midfielder was given credit once again. Fernandes made it a double when he scored from the spot in stoppage after Jose Maria Gimenez handled the ball. Manager Fernando Santos was satisfied with his side’s performance, as they secured a slot in the knockout rounds with the victory. Some changes in the lineup are expected as they conclude against South Korea, but will they be enough to end the group stage with a bang?
