The Jose Luis Mendilibar-led side however weren’t as lucky at the domestic front, as they finished the season 11th in LaLiga. Prior to that, they suffered a 1-2 heartbreaker at home against Real Madrid, with Rafa Mir’s 3 minute opener overriden by Rodrygo’s brace. Also, Marcos Acuña red card in the 2nd leg has dealt another blow to the Spaniards. Will they still pull through in their favourite European competition?

Roma are looking to lift the Europa League trophy for the first time in club history. Last season’s Europa Conference League winners booked their slot to Budapest by seeing off Bayer 04 Leverkusen 1-0 on aggregate. The lone goal of the tie came during the first leg in Rome, with Edoardo Bove scoring at the 63rd minute. In the second league at BayArena, the hosts controlled the game but were unable to turn the tide against the Giallorossi. At home, Roma finished 6th in Serie A, ending their campaign with another heartbreaking loss to UECL finalists Fiorentina 1-2. Stephan El Shaarawy’s 11 minute goal was nullified in the dying minutes and Luka Jovic and Jonathan Ikone scored with just five minutes to play. Manager Jose Mourinho, who hopes to win a European trophy for the second straight year, will now have to lead his side against the most successful club in the UEL.
