The Lions of Teranga, however, settled for 3rd in the COSAFA Cup in July, losing 3-4 to Zambia before beating Mozambique 1(4)-1(2) for the bronze. Manager Aliou Cisse announced a formidable lineup of stars that include players in the big 5 Europe leagues, such as Ballon d’Or runner-up Sadio Mane, keeper Edouard Mendy, defender Kalidou Koulibaly and forward Idrissa Gueye among others. But will this 26-man squad be sufficient to get through in the group stages, with the formidable Oranje being their first assignment?

The Netherlands will try to finally win a first ever World Cup, after heartbreaking final losses in 1974, 1978 and 2010. The latest iteration of the Oranje are ranked 8th overall in the world, and have topped their group in the UEFA Nations League, qualifying for the next round. The Louis van Gaal-led side won all of their Nations League matches save for one against Poland (2-2), making them this early one of the favourites in Qatar. Among the 26 announced for the World Cup lineup include defenders Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Ake, midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Denzel Dumfries, and forwards Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay. The list, however, goes deeper with many big 5 league players taking part, and this will be one of the Lions of Tearanga’s biggest problems to solve.

Senegal are arguably the best side out of Africa, but the Netherlands squad reads like an impenetrable fortress.
