PSG v Marseille Match Prediction – Preview

Paris Saint-Germain F.C.

Paris Saint-Germain are currently seated atop the Ligue 1 table, just a point clear of Lorient. Their last league outing ended in frustration as they were held 0-0 by Reims at the Stade Auguste-Delaune II. Sergio Ramos was sent off before the break after an argument with the referee after a foul brought up a second yellow. This gave confidence to the hosts, who kept a clean sheet but got nowhere near the net. The Christophe Galtier-led side would get a third straight draw in their last effort, as they were again held by Benfica 1-1 in the UEFA Champions League. Kylian Mbappe’s penalty conversion on 39 minutes was cancelled out by Joao Mario after the break–also from the spot. With superstar Lionel Messi still doubtful due to a calf injury, will the Parisiens have enough against their domestic rivals this weekend?

PSG have won 9 of their 11 home matches against Marseille in Ligue 1 under Qatari owners, which started in 2011/12 (D1 L1). This is the joint-most against an opponent at the Parc des Princes in this period, together with Montpellier and Lyon.
The Parisiens are undefeated in their final 19 matches in Ligue 1 (W14 D5), their longest such run in the top-flight since May 2018 – January 2019 (21).

Olympique de Marseille

Olympique de Marseille are seated thir in the table, two points behind Lorient and three behind PSG. They suffered heartbreak as they blew a lead to Ajaccio, going down 1-2 at the Stade Velodrome. Dmitri Payet scored from the spot to get his 100th Ligue 1 goal on just 15 minutes, but Bevic Moussiti-Oko levelled for the visitors just before the break. Leonardo Balerdi deflected into his own net after the restart to complete the scoreline. The Igor Tudor-led side channeled their frustration into a 2-0 win against Sporting Lisbon in the UCL. With Ricardo Esgaio sent off on 19 minutes, OM took advantage of a 10-man Leões side, as Matteo Guendozi and Alexis Sanchez scored 10 minutes of each other. Pedro Gonçalves’ red card on 60 minutes reduced the hosts to nine, and Paul Lopez successfully kept a clean sheet. Will this win boost Marseille’s chances against the Ligue 1 leaders?

Marseille have only beaten PSG once in their last 25 encounters across all competitions, (W20 D4): a 1-0 victory in September 2020 in Ligue 1.
OM lost for the first time in Ligue 1 this campaign last time out against Ajaccio, but have not lost straight matches in the top flight since September-October 2021 (2). They have picked up 23 points after 10 matches, their 3rd best start in top flight after 1998/99 (24 to finish 2nd) and 2014/15 (25 to finish 4th).

PSG v Marseille Match Prediction – Final Thoughts

While Messi’s participation still unsure, and Ramos out for Le Classique, PSG are still a force to be reckoned with, especially with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar Jr up front. Even Marseilles healthier squad will find it hard to break through at the Parc des Princes, as the Parisiens are hungry for a win. Emotions will still be at a high between these two rivals, but Paris should cruise easily to the win. With that, let’s take a look at our predictions.
