Ozil to quit football? (Sports News) – As one of the best playmakers in the world and a former World Cup winner with Germany, Mesut Ozil particularly shined in Real Madrid and Arsenal. With diminished playtime with Arsenal in 2020, he moved to the Turkish League the following year. Now, with his contract ending on a sour note on a 0-1 loss, the midfielder is reportedly quitting football altogether.

Ozil to Quit Football? – Details

The speculation started when Ozil joined Turkish club Fenerbahce for the 2021/22 season. He then went on to Istanbul Basaksehir where he signed a one year deal with option for another. It was a disappointment, as the German international only featured seven times that season.

Ozil was also rarely seen during training, sparking the rumours that he would retire once his contract his up. He, however, played with Basaksehir for 45 minutes in their last game against Kayseripor last Thursday. Turkish journalist Yakup Cinar did tweet that Ozil’s contract was to be terminated, and he would be saying goodbye to football forever.

Ozil to Quit Football? – A Remarkable Career

If he does retire, it will be the end of one of the most illustrious careers in football. Ozil helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, beating the Lionel Messi-lead Argentina 1-0 in the final.

On the club level, he, along with Cristiano Ronaldo, helped transform Real Madrid back into a European powerhouse, after failing to go deep into the Champions League knockout stages for a couple of years. He made 159 appearances for Los Blancos, scoring 27 goals and providing 81 assists, and also helped deliver a La Liga title to the club.

With Arsenal, he helped the club win three FA Cups. His time with the Gunners saw him being named German Player of the Year an unprecedented five times.

Ozil to Quit Football? – His Future Plans

As for his post-football plans, Ozil’s agent, Dr. Erkut Sogut has implied that the 34-year-old may look to participate in competitive gaming and streaming.

“I think he will not play football in any other club any more. I can’t see that,” Sogut had said in an interview while Ozil was still with Fenerbahce. “He will go more into esports, play himself and maybe become an esports athlete. He’s really good, to be honest, at Fortnite and I think one day I wouldn’t be surprised if he is competing. He owns a team – M10 Esports – and he has players. He has a gaming house in Germany. He has football, like FIFA, and Fortnite.”
