Morocco v Portugal Prediction – Preview

Morocco

Morocco booked their slot in the quarter-finals with a historic win over Spain, 0(3)-0(0) at Education City Stadium. The Atlas Lions have successfully repelled attacks by the young Furia Roja for 120 minutes, but the Hakim Ziyech and Achraf Hakimi-led side were unable to net as well. The upset was completed in the penalty shootout, wherein keeper Yassine Bono Bounou denied Sergio Busquets, Carlos Soler and Pablo Sarabia, while the Moroccans made 3 out of 4 penalties. With the victory, Walid Regragui became the first African manager to lead a team into a World Cup quarter-final. Will their miracle run continue against the more experienced and highly-talented Portugal?

Morocco will be looking to be the 1st African side to reach the semi-final of the World Cup. The previous 3 teams from Africa to get to the quarter-finals were eliminated at this stage: Cameroon 1990, Senegal 2002 and Ghana 2010.
The Atlas Lions come into this game having a 5-match unbeaten run in the World Cup (W2 D3); their longest streak without a loss in the tournament. Four of the matches Were under Wahid Regragui (W2 D2), who will be the first African coach to head a World Cup quarter-final game.

Portugal

Portugal reached their third-ever World Cup with a tour de force performance against Switzerland, 6-1, at Lusail Stadium. Even with the controversial Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, the Seleçao kicked into high-gear immediately, with striker Gonçalo Ramos  completing a historic hat-trick that began in the 17th minute. Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro and Rafael Leão chipped in goals in the winning effort, while Manuel Akanji‘s 58th-minute netter was a consolation for the Swiss. Manager Fernando Santos‘ gamble paid off, while insisting his relationship with Ronaldo remains unchanged as they move on up in the competition. Can they successfully fend off a challenge by an inspired Moroccan side?

This will be Portugal’s 3rd quarter-final in the World Cup. They have advanced in each of the previous 2 times, winning 5-3 against North Korea in 1966 and 3-1 in a penalty shootout against England in 2006.
A Seleçao netted as many times in their last match against Switzerland (6) as they had in their previous 8 matches in the World Cup knockout stages combined.

Morocco v Portugal Prediction – Final Thoughts

While Morocco’s defence and low average goal concession stopped the raw, young lineup of Spain, it will be a different story against the established stars of Portugal. The Atlas Lions will start strongly, but the Seleçao will wear them down eventually with their trigger happy ways, and with or without Ronaldo. Let’s take a look at the prediction.
