Messi to leave PSG? (Sports News) – With no contract extension signed yet, as well as disappointing results in French football and the UEFA Champions League, Lionel Messi is rumoured to leave Paris Saint-Germain in the summer. Candidates for his next club emerged, including American Major League Soccer club Inter Miami. Let’s get to know more about this story.

Messi to Leave PSG? – Breakdown in Talks

The 35-year superstar, who finally won the FIFA World Cup last year with Argentina, is “increasingly uncertain” about his contract, wherein he is paid €40 million per season. According to L’Equipe, he and his father Jorge Messi reportedly met with club officials a day after PSG’s loss to Bayern Munich, wherein an agreement could not be reached.

However, Messi took long to inform the organisation about his future, only recently sitting down with the club hierarchy for an extension. A second meeting is slated to happen in the coming days.

Messi to Leave PSG? – Team in Poor Form

Another aspect coming to light in the Messi situation is PSG’s poor form since the World Cup break. The Parisiens have lost five times this year in the French Ligue 1 and other competitions, which is more than their total losses from the whole of last year. They have also been knocked out of the French Cup tournament by bitter rivals Marseille. Most recently, they lost the 1st leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 against Bayern Munich.

Brazilian forward Neymar Jr. was caught in a clash with sporting director Luis Campos, and expressed his displeasure at his teammates after they fell to Monaco. Long-time PSG star Kylian Mbappe also took to social media to urge them to “stay strong and united.”

Messi to Leave PSG? – Tensions within the Team

Furthermore, Messi has also has doubts with PSG continuing to build around Mbappe. However, in public, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has praised the two-time World Cup finalist with France.

The 24-year old Mbappe signed a £1 million-per-week contract with PSG the previous summer: a deal that may have stifled the club’s mobility in the transfer market. Neymar, who himself is on contract with Paris until 2025, also had a public falling-out with Mbappe starting from last year.

Messi to Leave PSG? – Inter Miami Next Stop?

With talks with PSG possibly breaking down, Messi has been looking at other options. The most likely candidate is Inter Miami, which is owned by retired footballer David Beckham and coached by his teammate Phil Neville. Messi owns a house in Miami, and has regularly vacationed there with wife Antonella Roccuzzo and their children.

He stands to receive a paycut, however, if he does move to the MLS. For reference, the highest-paid player in the league is Lorenzo Insigne, who earns $14 million per season. But financial compensation is given by the league for goal achieved: an idea that could entice the Argentine.
