Man City charged with financial breach (Sports News) – After a four-year investigation, the English Premier League has formally charged Manchester City F.C. with more than 100 breaches of financial rules. As a result, the club faces punishments which include fines, points deduction and expulsion from the league. Let’s look more into the details of this report.

Man City Charged – The Complete Details

In a statement, the EPL said Man City violated rules that required them to give “accurate financial information that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position”. This includes club revenue, which covers operating costs and income from sponsorships.

Other breaches include non-disclosure of full details of manager remuneration in the period 2009-2013 (when Roberto Mancini was City boss); and player remuneration in the period 2010-2016.

In addition, City allegedly breached UEFA regulatory rules, including Financial Fair Play (FFP), from 2013-2018, as well as EPL rules on profitability and sustainability from 2015-2018.

The club were accused of not taking part in the investigation, which commenced in December 2018.

Man City Charged – Club Statement

City were caught unawares of the EPL statement, and were informed at the same time their statement was published.

On a statement posted on their website, the club expressed astonishment over the charges. However, they were open to an independent examination to clarify matters.

The club statement goes: “Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.

“The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.

“As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”

Man City Charged – UEFA’s Previous Charges

Man City are no stranger to wrongful doing allegations: in 2020, European football body UEFA ruled that the club breached FFP regulations in 2012-2016.

This decision was a result of UEFA’s investigation, which started when German daily Der Spiegel published in 2018 documents that show City inflated a sponsorship deal’s value.

As a result, they were banned from competing in Europe for two years. However, in late 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the ban.

Man City Charged – Pep to Leave?

As the news broke out, there is speculation that Man City manager Pep Guardiola may leave the club in the aftermath of possible charges. The Spaniard had previously stated that he was ready to walk away from Manchester if he’d been lied to about their financial activities.

In a UEFA Champions League press conference in May 2022, the 52-year old spoke to the media about the allegations. He said, “Why did I defend the club and the people? It’s because I work with them. When they are accused of something I ask them: ‘Tell me about that.’ They explain and I believe them.

“I said to them: ‘If you lie to me, the day after I am not here. I will be out and I will not be your friend any more. I put my faith in you because I believe you 100% from day one and I defend the club because of that,’” the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss continued.

Since the Abu Dhabi United group took control of the club in 2008, City have won six Premier League titles.
