Liverpool have been inconsistent in their last five outings across all competitions, winning twice, drawing twice and losing once. Rangers, meanwhile have had back-to-back wins after a string of losses. Let’s now take a closer look at this year’s UCL finalists.
Liverpool v Rangers Prediction – Preview
Liverpool F.C.
Liverpool narrowly lost the UCL title against Real Madrid last season, and are on a renewed quest to win a 7th title in the competition. However, they have to overcome a slow start to both their European and domestic campaigns. After losing the UCL opener with Napoli 1-4, the Jurgen Klopp-managed side survived a scare from Ajax, winning 2-1. Mohamed Salah netted on 17 minutes, but Mohammed Kudus levelled 10 minutes later. It took a last minute effort from Joel Matip in the second half to secure the Reds’ first UCL win this season. They were however brought back to earth in the Premier League (wherein they are seated 9th) when Brighton and Hove Albion drew them 3-3. The Seagulls’ Leandro Trossard scored a hat-trick to cancel out Robert Firmino’s comeback brace and an own goal by Alex Webster. Could they shake off the disappointing result when they face the Gers at Anfield?
Liverpool’s last meeting with a Scottish team in the European Cup/UCL was in 1980/81, where they beat Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen 5-0 on aggregate (1-0 away, 4-0 home). They then went on to win the competition.
The Reds have won 13 of their last 15 home UCL group stage matches (D1 L1), netting 36 times in such wins. Their only loss in the run was to Atalanta in November 2020.
Rangers F.C.
Rangers are looking to win the UCL for the first time in history. However, they are knee-deep in trouble as they suffered huge losses in their first two matches. After Ajax thrashed them 0-4 on opening night, they failed to contain a visiting Napoli (0-3). James Sands was thrown out on 55 minutes for a second yellow card after fouling Giovanni Simeone, after which the Gers then unravelled. Allan McGregor was unable to keep out successive goals from Matteo Politano, Giacomo Raspadori and Tanguy Ndombele. Meanwhile, in the Scottish premiership, the Giovanni van Bronckhorst-managed side retain their second placing in the table after a drubbing of Hearts 4-0. Antonio Colak had a first half brace, while Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent added one each in the final 45 minutes. Can they end their UCL losing streak against the Reds?
In all European contests, Rangers have just won one of their 7 away matches in England (D2 L4), defeating Leeds United 2-1 in the UCL qualifying phase in November 1992.
There has only been one instance of a Scottish team winning away at an English side in the European Cup/UCL in 7 tries (D2 L4): Celtics beat Leeds United 1-0 in the first leg of the 1969/70 semi-final.

Liverpool v Rangers Prediction – Final Thoughts
Even after heartbreaking results in their last outings, Liverpool should see Rangers as an easy assignment. The absence of Sands, plus the lack of a formidable lineup are the foremost challenges for the Scottish side going into Anfield. With Salah, Firmino and even Darwin Nunez becoming more comfortable in their roles, the Reds should steamroll their way to an emphatic victory. Here are our predictions for the game.
