Japan v Norway Prediction – Preview

Japan

Japan ended the group stages on top of Group C, scoring an impressive 11 goals and not conceding once. After emphatic victories over Zambia (5-0) and Costa Rica (2-0) respectively, they humbled WWC title favourites Spain 4-0 in Wellington. Hinata Miyazawa‘s first-half brace, along with goals from Riko Ueki and Mina Tanaka shocked La Roja, while Ayaka Yamashita kept a third consecutive clean sheet for the Futoshi Ikeda-coached side. Now looking more and more like a title contender, the 2011 world champions begin their quest for a second Cup. However, they take on a rejuvenated Norway side who are out to prove that their last minute drive to the final 16 is no fluke. Can the ladies of Japan make a statement once again?

Norway

Norway finished the group stage in second place at Group A. After a shock 0-1 defeat to hosts New Zealand and being held to a 0-0 draw by Switzerland, they bounced back in style by thrashing The Philippines 6-0 in Auckland. Sophie Roman Haug led all scorers with a hat-trick over both halves. Caroline Graham Hansen’s goal tripled the lead going into the break, while Frida Maanum‘s curling shot hit Filipina Alicia Barker on the way into the net. Guro Reiten also converted a penalty awarded after Jaclyn Sawicki took her down. The Hege Riise-coached side now breathe new life into their campaign, but they now have to take on an in-form Nadeshiko squad who are hungry for more. Can the Norwegian Football Girls rise to the occasion?

Japan v Norway Prediction – Final Thoughts

Japan have established themselves as favourites going into the knockout rounds, but the competition will only get tougher. Norway, meanwhile, may have gotten into their groove, but questions of consistency remain. We predict this match to be a nail-biter from the get-go. However, the Nadeshiko have wowed us time and again with their resiliency and drive, and we see them prevailing in the end. With that, let’s take a look at the prediction.
