Haaland signs with Man City (Sports News) – After weeks of speculation, Norwegian sensation Erling Haaland has officially completed his transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City on a five-year deal. Let’s now look into the historic transfer.
Haaland Signs With Man City – Record Transfer
The 21-year-old, who is currently one of the hottest players in the world, was a sought-after football player and was linked with clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. But in the end, the 2021-2022 Premier League champions was able to ward off the competition to agree to a £51 million ($63 million) release for the gifted striker.
This move ended all speculation where the prized striker would land. City also wanted to sign England captain Harry Kane from Tottenham fell short last summer, but Pep Guardiola’s men still had enough to pip Liverpool by a point to win a fourth Premier League title in five seasons.
Haaland Signs With Man City – Statements of Player and Club
“This is a proud day for me and my family,” said Haaland in a statement to ManCity.com “I have always watched City and have loved doing so in recent seasons. I want to score goals, win trophies, and improve as a footballer and I am confident I can do that here. This is a great move for me, and I can’t wait to get started in pre-season.”
The Norwegian also expressed excitement about playing for manager Pep Guardiola. “There are so many world-class players in this squad and Pep is one of the greatest managers of all time, so I believe I am in the right place to fulfil my ambitions.”
Man City’s Director of Football Txiki Begiristain, speaking on behalf of the club, added: “We have been monitoring Erling for several years now, so we are delighted to bring him here to Manchester City. He is a huge talent and has been one of the best strikers in Europe over the last few seasons.”
“Erling has everything we want in a striker and we are certain he will excel in this squad and this system,” the club executive continued. “His rise has been remarkable, but he is still only 21. His best years are ahead of him and we are confident he can get even better working with Pep.”
Haaland Signs With Man City – Like Father, Like Son
Haaland follows in the footsteps of his father Alfie, who signed for English side Leeds United 22 years ago. Also born in Leeds, the younger Haaland moved with his family to Bryne in Norway when he was three years old. At 15 years of age, he had made the Norwegian second-tier. Then, at 18 years of age, he became top scorer of Norway club Molde in 2018, netting 12 times in 25 games.
He then moved to Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg, where between August and September 2019, he scored 17 goals in nine games. In addition, Haaland had three hat-tricks; one of them coming in his Champions League debut against Genk. All in all, he netted a total of 28 goals before being signed to Borussia in January 2019.
At Dortmund, Haaland would become the first Bundesliga player to score five goals in his first two matches and seven in his first three. In 2019/20 he scored an astounding 44 times in 40 club appearances and netted 41 times in the same number of contests in 2020/21. In Europe, he would also impress, as he became the fastest and youngest footballer to reach 20 goals in the UCL.
Among the other accolades Haaland would receive include the following:
2020/21 Bundesliga Player of the Season
2020/21 Champions League Forward of the Season
2021 German Cup winner (with Dortmund)
Youngest Bundesliga player to score 50 goals
2020/21 Nations League Golden Boot
Haaland Signs With Man City – Also Shining for Norway
International success has also come for Haaland. He scored 20 goals in 22 caps for Norway. He suited up for the national team in 2019 as a 19-year-old and netted for the first time in his third appearance for the team against Austria.
The next month, he got his first international hat-trick as he led the Norwegians to victory against Romania (4-0). He would later be awarded the Golden Boot in the UNL.
Norway, who have not qualified for the 2022 World Cup, will be pinning their hopes on Haaland for a possible UNL trophy. And so will Man City, who are hoping that by picking up the striker, they could finally win the elusive Champions League trophy.
