Greenwood rape charges dropped (Sports News) – Manchester United player Mason Greenwood has been cleared of the charges brought forward against him. These charges include attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Read on for more details about the matter.
Greenwood Rape Charges Dropped – Background
In January 2022, Greenwood was arrested in light of allegations of physical abuse, stemming from troubling videos and images of the 21-year-old footballer. He was then charged last October, and was scheduled to stand trial in November. The charges were made, even as the alleged victim said in April 2022 that they no longer wanted the English footballer prosecuted.
A year after, the Crown Prosecution Service mentioned that the charged were withdrawn after 12 witnesses, including the main victim, withdrew involvement. Said a spokesman for the service: “We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review. In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case.”
“We have explained our decision to all parties,” continued the statement. “We would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met.”
Greenwood Rape Charges Dropped – The Aftermath
“I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support,” a simple statement from Greenwood’s camp read.
As for his status at Manchester United, the club has acknowledged the dropping of charges, but is now “conducting its own process” before taking action. A representative for United said: “We will not make any further comment until the process is complete.”
In light of the charges, Man Utd prevented the forward from playing or training with the club. At the moment, Greenwood is on a £100,000-a-week contract with the Red Devils. Some United supporters have also called on the club to boot out Greenwood in spite of the withdrawal of charges against him.
Greenwood Rape Charges Dropped – Ten Hag’s Response
Greenwood, who was one of Man Utd’s most promising talents, was valued at around £50 million prior to his incarceration. He last saw action in January 2022 against West Ham.
Since then, Erik ten Hag was appointed boss of the club to replace caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick. When Ten Hag was asked about Greenwood during his unveiling last May, the Dutchman’s response was: “Let’s wait for the judgment.”
“If he’s proven innocent he would get a place in my team, he’s an exceptional talent who can play on the left wing, right-wing, centre forward, and false nine,” said the Red Devils boss, who had recently turned 53 years old.
