Gerrard sacked by Villa – Fate Decided by Fulham

It has been a turbulent year for both Aston Villa and Gerrard, who was expected to turn around the fortunes of the team after Dean Smith’s ouster last November. Since then, the club finished 14th in the 2021/22 season, and have also spent a few weeks in the relegation zone. At the moment, the Villans are tied in points with 18th-seated Wolverhampton.

In what would become Gerrard’s last game with the club, Villa were totally dominated by Fulham at Craven Cottage. Harrison Reed struck home on a rebound from Emiliano Buendia to give the hosts a 1-0 lead going into halftime. Douglas Luiz would then be sent off after an alleged headbutt on Aleksandar Mitrovic, adding to the woes of the Villans. Mitrovic himself doubled the lead from the spot, and Tyrone Mings’ erratic deflection into his net from Neeskans Kebano would seal the fate of the visitors–as well as their manager.

Gerrard sacked by Villa – Abrupt End to EPL Stint

A legendary figure in the Premier League, Gerrard first rose to fame as midfielder and captain of Liverpool F.C. beginning in 1998. He helped the Reds win several trophies. These include the FA Cup (2x), the Football League Cup (3x), the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League. He was also named UEFA Club Footballer of the Year in 2005, and elected to the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021.

On the international level, Gerrard played for England from 2000-2014, and served as captain from 2010-14. He has 114 caps with the Three Lions, scoring a total of 21 goals with them.

After coaching the Liverpool U18/U19 teams, Gerrard was appointed manager of Rangers F.C. first team in 2018. In 2020/21, Gerrard led Rangers in a record-breaking season, beating rivals Celtic in back-to-back derby wins and winning the Scottish Premiership for the first time in 10 years. In November of that year, he replaced Dean Smith as Aston Villa boss, a position he held until now.
