Dortmund have been flawless in their last five contests in all competitions. Chelsea, on the other hand, have struggled to get a win, drawing three consecutive times in their most recent outings. Let’s now take a closer look at both teams.
Dortmund v Chelsea Prediction – Preview
Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund ended the group stage at second in Group G with 9 points. On the final day of the group stage, they were held 1-1 by Copenhagen. Thorgan Hazard opened the scoring on 23 minutes with a low half volley. This was cancelled out just before the half when Hakon Haraldsson struck into the far corner. The Edin Terzić led side have been phenomenal as of late, knocking out Bochum 2-1 in the DFB Pokal Cup and saw off Werder 2-0 in the Bundesliga. With a minor injury setback to Youssoufa Moukoko, could BVB manage to defeat Chelsea at home?
Dortmund have not won in their last 10 matches against English opposition (D2 L8). Their last such win was in March 2016, where they defeated Tottenham 2-1 in the Europa League. Coincidentally, the scorer of both goals is current Chelsea player Aubameyang.
BVB lost just 4 of their last 21 UCL home matches (W10 D7). However, three of the 4 losses were to English sides: 2 against Tottenham (1-2 in 2017/18 and 0-1 in 2018/19) and one against Manchester City (1-2 in 2020/21).
Chelsea F.C.
Chelsea ended the group stage atop Group E with 16 points. On their last day in the group stage, they got revenge at home against first round conquerors Dinamo Zagreb, 2-1. It appeared another upset was on the way when Bruno Petković netted on only 7 minutes for the visitors. However, Raheem Sterling levelled 11 minutes later when he finished home Pierre-Emrick Aubameyang‘s pass. Twelve minutes later, Denis Zakaria completed the turnaround with a low shot. The Graham Potter-led side have however struggled domestically in recent times, as they seat 10th in the Premier League and managed just one goal in their last three games, which each ended in draws. Can the Blues get back on form as they head to Dortmund for their round of 16 first leg?
Chelsea have won just 3 of their 11 previous away matches against German teams (D3 L5), with two of the wins in consecutive campaigns against Schalke 04 in 2013/14 and 2014/15. The last such trip was under coach Frank Lampard, in a 1-4 loss to Bayern Munich, August 2020.
Graham Potter could become the 2nd English manager to win away from home against a German side in the UCL. Only Bobby Robson has done this feat, with the second one a 3-1 win at Bayer 04 Leverkusen in February 2003 on his 70th birthday.

With Dortmund having home advantage against a struggling Chelsea, they are the odds-on favourites to take the first leg. Unless the Blues’ new lineup have figured it all out togehter, BVB should put up a show on their own turf. This will give them enough confidence before the second leg in West London.
