Chelsea have been inconsistent in their last five games across all competitions with two wins, one draw and two losses; however, they are coming off a win with new manager Graham Potter. AC Milan too have been inconsistent, but have mostly won their assignments and are also fresh off a win. Let’s now take a closer look at each side.
Chelsea v AC Milan Prediction – Preview
Chelsea F.C.
Chelsea are currently seated bottom in Group E, having one draw and one loss (1 point), and a -1 goal difference (1 scored, 2 conceded). New manager Graham Potter had his debut in the club with their 1-1 draw against RB Salzburg. Raheem Sterling opened the second half with a curling finish, but Noah Okafor levelled on 15 minutes to time. Meanwhile in the Premier League, the Blues are finding their form after a slow start; they rallied back against Crystal Palace 2-1 with newbie Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Conor Gallagher scoring. Can they sustain the momentum under new management against the Rossoneri?
Chelsea have just lost two of their 13 home Europe games against Italian teams (W8 D3), with both losses coming in the UCL: 1-2 against Lazio in March 2000 and 0-1 against Inter Milan in March 2010.
Blues manager Graham Potter will only be the third Englishman to go against the Rossoneri in the UCL, after Bobby Robson (Porto, 1993/94) and Harry Redknapp (Tottenham, 2010/11). Both managers were unbeaten (D1 Robson, W1 D1 Redknapp).
A.C. Milan
AC Milan are currently on top of Group E with 1 win and 1 draw (4 points), and a goal difference of 2 (4 scored, 2 conceded). In their last game in the competition, they saw off Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 at the San Siro. Olivier Giroud’s penalty and Alexis Saelemaekers gave the Rossoneri a 2-0 lead at the half. Mislav Orsic threatened on 58 minutes with a finish, but Tommaso Pobega restored the lead 11 minutes later, sealing the win. The Stefano Pioli-managed side have since had mixed results in the Serie A, where they are currently seated 5th. They lost 1-2 to Napoli and won 3-1 vs Empoli, with the latter seeing Ante Rebic, Fode Ballo-Toure and Rafael Leao each scoring. Will they have enough against the Blues at Stamford Bridge?
AC Milan’s only victory over Chelsea was in February 1966 in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, winning 2-1 at the San Siro. That third round tie then went on to a deciding match which ended 1-1, and Chelsea progressed on a coin toss.
The Rossoneri have won only one of their 20 away Europe games in England (D7 L12): a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford against Manchester United in February 2005. Their only other win on English soil (without a penalty shootout) was in the 1963 European Cup final against Benfica (2-1 at Wembley Stadium).
