Chelsea sign Fernandez for record fee (Sports News) – After helping Argentina win the World Cup last year, Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez scored the best Premier League deal yet in history. Chelsea signed the 22-year old after meeting his release clause of €121 million (£106 million), with Fernandez inking an eight-and-a-half year contract with the London-based club.

Fernandez had agreed personal terms with Chelsea. He is the seventh sign of a January Transfer window which saw the entry of Mykhailo Mudryk, David Fofana, and Benoit Badiashile among others. They also lost Jorginho, a key figure in their Europa League and Champions League winning campaigns, to Arsenal.
All in all, Chelsea has spent a total of £500 million on players ever since the club’s takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Fernandez, who started his senior career in Argentina’s storied club, River Plate, moved to Lisbon-based side Benfica in 2022. During this period, he has played 29 times across all competitions. He scored four goals and provided seven assists for As Aguias.
Chelsea are currently 10th in the EPL, and are in need of 10 points to secure top-four spot. Their next league game will be against fellow west London club Fulham.
