Blackburn KOs Leicester to reach FA Cup quarterfinals (Sports News) – Blackburn Rovers, official partner of BetVision, completed one of the biggest upsets in the FA Cup tournament by beating Premier League side Leicester City. Let’s get to know more about the details of this story.
Blackburn KOs Leicester – Details
The Rovers, who are currently 4th in the table, and looking towards promotion to the top flight, held their own against the 2021 FA Cup winners. Their heroics have put them in the last 8 after 8 years of being absent.
After the Foxes’ Daniel Iversen saved Tyrhys Dolan’s strike, the Rovers midfielder curled past the keeper to open the scoring. A miss by Ryan Hedges failed to double the lead, but soon after Sammie Szmodics went clear to convert on 52 minutes.
Kelechi Iheanacho pulled one back from close range, but Blackburn held on for the win. Supporters were chanting “We are going to Wembley” after their first win at Leicester since 1991.
Blackburn KOs Leicester – Manager’s Statement
Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson, who took over from Tony Mowbray at the start of the season, was ecstatic with the win.
“It was an unbelievable night for the club, the performance and result was well deserved,” said the Danish-born boss. “I asked my players to be brave on the ball, to take to the game to Leicester, an extremely good side who beat Tottenham 4-1 a couple of weeks ago. They followed the game-plan. In possession we played one and two touch, we moved the ball quick and we were brave, on a good pitch as well.”
“It’s great for the club, the players who have wrote a new chapter in our great history,” continued Tomasson. “It’s been a few years since Rovers have been so far, so the players can be really proud. It was great to hear our fans singing at the end of the game. We won the game on the pitch and the fans won it in the stands as well.”
Blackburn KOs Leicester – Also Doing Well in Championship
Apart from chasing glory at Wembley, Blackburn are also looking to keep their form in the EFL Championship. Currently at fourth in the table, they are also aiming for a promotion to the Premier League, which they won in the 1994/95 season with Alan Shearer.
After the draw, Rovers are now set to host Sheffield United in the semifinal. The Blades, who are currently second in the Championship, also caused an upset by booting out Big Six club Tottenham from the competition.
